An interesting tale of why you shouldn't just trust the words of even incredibly smart scientists, but check the science underneath.

Slow motion for a slow morning: Hydrophobic surfaces and magnetic liquids. Also clearly visible plane of focus and cool macro shots. But sorry, #slomoguys, this is not science. It's cool tech and nifty observation, but you're not testing any hypothesis, so it's not science.

Carl-Eric Menzel Here's an example of the student-driven teaching model I've been telling you about. If it works in gang-ridden Mexican slums, I don't see why it shouldn't work elsewhere.

Do any of you write anything in assembler for work these days? If so, why?

Sounds crazy. I hope it's reproducible.

After about 2 1/2 years of planning, sketching, working, re-working, accidentally coming up with new designs, and kludging around problems, my home-made Murphy bed works! This finally leaves me with a good space for doing a bit of work-out in the morning (as long as the bed doesn't fall on me:). Next, I shall use the space on the underside of the bed for extra storage.

The brown floor and underside just changes the color of the room.

Gadget of the day: Solar-powered USB chargers that stick to the window. Regular power outlets of the same system also exist, but USB is what I use these days.

From our New Year's trip over Fürth for New Year's Feuerzangenbowle to a few days in the family summer cottage. Mostly experimenting with lighting things by bounced flash. While the result is much better than direct flash, especially the Feuerzangenbowle and cottage interior leave some appropriate mood to be desired.
