Another secret treaty that limits protection for ordinary people, restricts how countries can improve their citizen's lives, and helps large companies make more money. sigh Originally shared by Daniel Mack "But the latest leak has revealed more. The agreement would also prohibit countries from enacting free and open source software mandates. Although “software used for critical infrastructure” is already carved out from this prohibition (and so is software that is not “mass market software”, whatever that means), there are other circumstances in which a country might legitimately require suppliers to disclose their source code." #TISA https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/05/tisa-yet-another-leaked-treaty-youve-never-heard-makes-secret-rules-internet https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2015/05/tisa-yet-another-leaked-treaty-youve-never-heard-makes-secret-rules-internet

Visited the Crazy Ice-cream Maker with the team. Alice-in-Wonderland murals on the walls: Great! Choice of weird ice cream: Large. Weather: Cloudy and chilly. Number of customers: Surprisingly large. Bloodpeach-maracuja icecream: Great. Ayinger Jahrhunderbier icecream: Surprisingly good, if somewhat confusing my taste buds. Bacon icecream: Two tastes working at cross purposes. Not that great. https://www.google.de/url?sa=t&rct=j&q&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCIQFjAA&url=http://www.dvem.de/&ei=_tNlVfGXLcelsgGLt4GAAw&usg=AFQjCNGFr1mWXEZlMU87BcBOMW0wqMNVlw&sig2=EG_J9MjDAcd55vNx6CNiUA&bvm=bv.93990622,d.bGQ

Curious ideas in here for people with sleep issues.

Curious ideas in here for people with sleep issues. Originally shared by Rob Gordon A third state of consciousness?  This article describes something I have heard before - that it is not our nature to sleep in a single eight hour shift, but rather in two shorter sessions of different kinds of sleep, with a kind of third state of consciousness between the two. I have been in that third state - but not very often - perhaps once a year.   In it, I am awake - even alert in a way - but don't really care about anything.  I usually walk outside.  I can still think, but more slowly - it is hard to describe.  This article describes how to conjure this state.   Not something I can do in my life at the moment, but it is going on the bucket list.   http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/inspired-life/wp/2015/05/19/want-to-experience-the-deep-mystical-sleep-of-our-ancestors-turn-your-lights-off-at-dusk/

The Slippery Slope is a Rollercoaster

Image
The Slippery Slope is a Rollercoaster One of the standard arguments against gay marriage -- and the only one that's other than "we don't like it" -- is that it's a slippery slope to pedophilia and bestiality and other obviously bad behaviours. Let's take a quick look at that. Below is a chart of how the laws on gay marriage and legality of sex with animals has changed in Europe over the last 25 years. If there's any slippery slope in this picture, it's towards more ethical behaviours. Data from Wikipedia (though I didn't dig in enough to see if there were some changes before the most recent change). For countries that didn't have data, I assumed bestiality is legal and gay marriage isn't.

The curious world of cutthroat words, to which Mickey Blake has added one, namely The Frida Diaries' title of Princess Wigglebutt. Originally shared by Yonatan Zunger The most common kind of compound word is what's called "endocentric:" it includes the thing that it is. So a houseboat is a kind of boat; a shoe salesman is a kind of salesman; a whoremonger is a kind of monger. (That being an old word for a dealer or trader) The second most common is "exocentric:" made out of nouns and adjectives, but not including the thing that it is. (e.g., a loudmouth is not a kind of mouth, but a kind of person.) This is all about a third category: exocentric compounds that are built out of verbs, which describe what the thing does. Brianne Hughes  wrote her master's thesis on these, where she named them "cutthroat compounds," after such an example: A cutthroat is someone who cuts throats. These are surprisingly rare in English, but are common among kids: ...

This article explains very nicely why I get scared every time somebody holds up the US as an example for how they want Europe to work. We may not realise it among our own scandals and problems, but we have a lot of good social structure to lose.

I knew the US prison system is fucked up, but I hadn't made such a straight connection to slavery before.

I knew the US prison system is fucked up, but I hadn't made such a straight connection to slavery before. Originally shared by Rugger Ducky I am a citizen of a nation in which slavery is legal.  That’s a very hard thing for me to say, and a harder thing still to hear. Hard for me to say, because I have lived my life fighting for the idea that all citizens of our country are equal. Of course, I’ve always had the privilege of having white skin to hide me from the truth. Harder still to hear, because in a nation where slavery is accepted, no one is ever truly a free citizen.  But I can’t hide from the truth anymore. Even the UN Report on Human Rights in the United States pulled no punches when released last week.  http://www.upr-info.org/sites/default/files/document/united_states/session_22_-_may_2015/a_hrc_wg.6_22_l.10.pdf I’m a lifelong, passionate student of history, and dreamer of the future. Forget the monkeys, this is the really interesting "missing link". Originally shared by David Brin Amazing. Of the three major super-domains of cellular life on Earth – bacteria, archaea and eukaryotes (which include metazoan, multi-celled organisms, like us), it now appears that we are more closely related to the archaea, which were discovered as a separate clade not so long ago and were at-first thought to be a relic corner of life’s diversity.  It puts Greg Bear’s weird novel VITALS in a new light. http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/speaking-of-science/wp/2015/05/06/newly-discovered-missing-link-called-loki-ties-us-to-our-single-celled-ancestors
