My understanding of the Puppy events: Bunch of people say "You're only nominating these people because of who they are" and in protest nominate some other people only because of who they are. Everybody else go "You're being stupid and destructive" and make them fail gloriously, increasing engagement within the SF community a lot. Next year will surely be interesting.
