I have used that approach on cars and houses. Start with something cheap so you can find out what is important to you and don't buy for your perceived future needs.
I did cheat a bit on that with cars about # of child seats that would fit while we were expecting our 3rd child and with the second house wrt. school options but I consider that pragmatism :)
