Settlers of Catan is a great game, especially as an introduction to the non-violent "Eurogames" style. I particularly like it with the Knights and Cities expansion.

However: deliberately not explaining all the rules to get an advantage is unsportsmanlike. Yes, you might forget some, especially in more complex games, and situations may come up where the initial explanation was unclear, but deliberately leaving out rules is on the level of displacing pieces when your opponent's back is turned.

  1. It is certainly interesting how different groups have different conventions when it comes to how to treat other players.

  2. Not explaining rules? I don't see how that is anything other than cheating. If you can't win on a level playing field, you lose, end of discussion.
