    Checking the current sounds good. The motor didn't turn when there was only the little stump of old filament in there, so I don't think it's blocked, though I don't remember that I checked it entirely without filament.

    If you have a spare motor, might be worth ruling out cabling too.  Assuming you're using Pololu-style drivers, you can also temporarily swap drivers with e.g. X to see if your carrier is bad.
