Charging EVs is cheaper than filling up gas cars in all US states, by up to almost a factor four. Maintenance is also lower - there's a nice list of all the moving parts that can't break in EVs because they just aren't needed. This, in the end, is what will make EVs win.

  1. Battery cost is suppose to shrink by 19% each time the volume of production doubles. Some estimates predict 5 such events roughly the next 10 years.

Continuing to drive an old car for as long as possible might be a wining strategy to jump on EV later when it has improved?

Everyone else: please buy an EV to drive down the costs :)

  2. The gas difference listed here comes out to about $4000 over 8 years. Assuming the difference in other maintenance is the same, that's $8000 total. For the popular Nissan Leaf, that's 1/4 of the price of the base model. Doesn't tell me whether that's cheaper than a gas car, though, as I don't know what's appropriate to compare with.

  3. I don't expect I'll ever get to own a gas car. But then, odds are good I won't ever own a car, period.
